Jakarta. The Medan District Court on Thursday sentenced a 28-year-old Lithuanian man to life in prison for smuggling more than three kilograms of crystal methamphetamine into Indonesia.

Presiding Judge Indra Cahya ruled that Verikas Mindaugas was guilty of violating articles 115, 114, and 112 of a 2009 Law on Narcotics by attempting to smuggle 3.2 kilograms of crystal meth last December, news portal Kompas.com reported.

Customs and excise officers at Kualanamu International Airport in Medan arrested Mindaugas, who was arriving from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and confiscated 449 grams of crystal meth found in a silver women’s handbag, 406 grams in a red handbag, 415 grams in a brown handbag and 2.02 kilograms in a blue backpack.

Mindaugas accepted the verdict, which was lighter than the death sentence the prosecutors had demanded.

Prosecutor Dwi Melly Nova, on the other hand, told the court that she would consider filing an appeal.
