Lindsay Sandiford in her Kerobokan death row cell |
Jakarta. A recent meeting between the UK ambassador to Indonesia and the Indonesian government did not touch on the fate of a British grandmother who is on death row in the country for smuggling drugs, the minister of foreign affairs said on Friday.
“We discussed the British prime minister’s plan to visit Indonesia. The focuses were in economy, trade, investment and others,” Minister Retno L.P. Marsudi told reporters at the State Palace in Jakarta.
“Nothing [about Lindsay Sandiford],” she added.
Sandiford was sentenced to death in 2013 and sent to the same jail as Australian drug traffickers Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran — who both were executed by firing squad in April this year, along with five other foreigners and one Indonesian.
Sandiford was caught trying to smuggle 3.8 kilograms of cocaine when she arrived in Bali from Bangkok in 2012.
Indonesia has received strong criticism from around the globe over the executions.

Jokowi's "Deterrence Effect": Jakarta Police Seize 16 Kilos of Meth Smuggled From China
Police in North Jakarta have foiled an attempt to smuggle 16 kg of crystal methamphetamine into the country from China. |
Sr. Comr. Susetio Cahyadi, the North Jakarta Police chief, said on Friday that the drugs were packaged in boxes marked as massage equipment and sent by ship from Guangzhou.
After somehow clearing customs at Jakarta’s Tanjung Priok Port, the drugs were sent to a warehouse in nearby Penjaringan subdistrict, where police seized them along with a woman, identified as Widya, who showed up to pick them up.
“Widya is an accomplice for three Nigerian drug traffickers who are currently still at large,” Susetio said.
He said the drugs had an estimated street value of Rp 24 billion ($1.8 million).
Widya faces drug trafficking charges that carry a maximum sentence of death.
