Beka
Lamb is Belizean writer Zee Edgell's debut novel published in 1982.
People who read this story will read it again and again over the
decades. This story's main character is also the name of book "Beka
Lamb". This story covers only a few months in Beka's life with loving
and beautiful imagry, while highlighting the overwhelming presence of
the Catholic Church, Matriarchal Society, Poverty,
and the Political Strife on her, her parents Lilla and Bill Lamb, her
grandmother MIss ivy, and her brothers Zandy and Chuku,and their culture
and neighborhood and its affect on them all. Beka is a young teen at
the beginning of the story and struggling to complete her first form at
St. Cececilia's Academy. She only one of two girls from her entire
neighbood who actually attends school. The other is her best friend
Toycie Qualowho who's life ends in pregnancy, miscarriage and death in a
storm. Beka's inteligence and humor get her into scrapes, beatings, and
more... And yet even with all this, Beka's spirit is not crushed. Beka
Lamb was included as part of the Heinemann Caribbean Writers Series.
