Having high school students write an autobiography is a great way

Having high school students write an autobiography is a great way for their teachers to learn more about them. Before starting, the teacher should have the students read an autobiography. This not only introduces the students to autobiographies, it also doubles as a non-fiction reading assignment. This can read as an independent assignment or in literature circles.Once they finish reading the
autobiography, the teacher and the class need to have some discussions. They should discuss the differences between a biography and an autobiography. In addition, they can talk about how the story was organized. It will help, too, if they list what kind of information was included in the autobiography. Last, the teacher needs to have the students talk about what they liked learning about the person they read about. After the discussions have taken place, it is time to start writing. Each student should start on his or her own biography. This should be a positive experience that allows the students to share the important events of their lives. The teacher needs to share her expectations for the students autobiographies. An example of how the autobiography should be set up is helpful for the students to see. For example, the autobiography could have four sections, from birth to four years, four years to eight years, nine years to twelve years, and then the teenage years to the present day. The teacher should share how long he or she wants the piece. Having a typed or neatly written final copy is usually what teachers require for writing assignments. In addition, the teacher can require additional things in the assignment such as a neatly decorated cover, a family tree and/or pictures. The teacher also needs to share what he or she expects to see in the autobiography. The students should include things that make them unique. In addition, students should also include favorite things such as favorite friends, relatives, music, colors, television shows, movies, foods, etc. Other great things the students can include in the autobiography are their firsts, first friend, first school, first lost tooth, first teacher, etc. More reference links: www.scholastic.com teachers.net
